VARANASI: The pond area of the  Gyanvapi   mosque complex, where a  shivling  was purportedly found during a court-mandated survey last Monday, became a fortress on Wednesday with unauthorised entry cut off much ahead of the protected zone and officials conducting surprise checks in keeping with the  Supreme Court ’s directive on Tuesday to seal off the wuzu khana. The ablution pond had been sealed on Monday on the orders of Varanasi civil judge (senior division) Ravi Kumar Diwakar. This was soon after a lawyer representing one of the plaintiffs in the Shringar Gauri worship case claimed the ongoing survey had revealed a shivling hidden under the water. “The pond area is covered and has a fencing with doors that have been sealed to ensure no one reaches even close to the restricted area. PM panel flags urban job guarantee scheme, universal basic income

A REPORT commissioned and released by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) has suggested that the Government should launch a   guaranteed employment programme for the urban unemployed   and roll out a   universal basic income (UBI) scheme   to reduce income gaps. Citing the “skewed nature” of income distribution in the country, the report also recommended steps to raise minimum income and more government spending on the social sector to make vulnerable sections immune to sudden shocks” and “stop their descent into poverty”. Calling out the West, India on Wednesday said that food grains should not go the way of the Covid-19 vaccines as it voiced concern over hoarding and discrimination amid the "unjustified increase" in food prices. It stressed that its decision to restrict wheat exports will ensure it can truly respond to those most in need. "A number of low income societies are today confronted with the twin challenges of rising costs and difficulty in access to food grains. Even those like India, who have adequate stocks, have seen an unjustified increase in food prices. It is clear that hoarding and speculation is at work. Perarivalan released Live Updates:  DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin,   who met Perarivalan and his family , on Wednesday, welcomed the   Supreme Court’s verdict ordering the release of A G Perarivalan , who has served over 30 years in jail in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, and said “The SC order also clarified that the Governor cannot interfere in the powers of an elected state government.” The opposition AIADMK also welcomed the order, recalling steps taken by the late J Jayalalithaa for Perarivalan’s release.
